What goes on behind the scenes in the field of football? Here is a heartwarming story of one former player who is using his wealth to help the poor and needy. Tim Tebow, who was a backup quarterback for the New York Jets and now an SEC college football analyst is helping children and teens all around the world. His foundation builds playrooms in children’s hospitals, aids families in adopting kids, and makes wishes come true for the sick. Recently, his humanitarian organization paid off layaway bills for Christmas presents and opened a new hospital in the Philippines.
An event of a different kind is planned on February 13, the day before Valentines. It is called, “Night To Shine.” This will be an opportunity for special needs kids 16 and up to be a guest at a prom-style affair. It is hoped that 50 churches nationwide will sign on. Tebow’s foundation will provide make-up, hair stylings, flowers, professional photography, food, dancing, and games, all free of charge. Each special needs teen will be greeted by a host. Tebow said, “This event perfectly fits our mission to bring faith, hope, and love to those needing a brighter day in their darkest hour of need.”
As you are viewing football games remember the many players like Tim Tebow who have caring and compassionate hearts that go way beyond the gridiron. Let’s keep things in perspective, too, that there are things that matter more than football.
You may not consider yourself to be talented at sports. You may not have a lot of money to pay off layaway plans, build hospitals, help a family adopt a child, or host proms for special needs teens. There is something within you, however, that can give away compassion. Tim Tebow is an evangelical Christian who is an example of one who extends grace to those in need and accepts those who are often not considered equals. He is living out I Timothy 6:18 which says “…to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share.” God gave his Son, Jesus, that we may have forgiveness and hope. In one way or another we are all people with special needs.
What can you do to pass on grace to others? Is there someone you can think of who may feel neglected or in need of loving acceptance? Maybe even a stranger. Befriend them and do some heartwarming act of kindness.
I am a huge Tebow fan! His whole famiy is awesome and does much work in the way of helping those who have nothing.
