The Only Solution To Evil

A survey by Emerson College revealed that 41 percent of young people believe the murder of the United Health Care CEO was justified. This shows how far our secular culture has fallen into the cesspool of debased thinking , as prophesied in Romans 1:28-32. After listing a multitude of ungodly and evil practices, this passage concludes by saying that people will “give approval to those who practice them.”  Isaiah 5:20 says, “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness…”  This is a huge black stain on our culture.

The question is, how can people become so evil? Some call it mental illness, but when some evil is premeditated is it really mental illness, or is it evil intent caused by hatred? The driving of a vehicle into a crowd of people in New Orleans was described by a law enforcement officer as an intentional act of evil. The same could be said about what happened in a marketplace in Germany.

What we are seeing is an indication of the sinful nature of humanity. John 3:19 says that “people love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil.” A parent does not have to train a child to do wrong. It is inherent in their nature. People choose to hate instead of having conversations leading to respect and understanding, or to express their grievances. Hatred builds up in their minds and smolders in their thinking, leading to evil acts, as stated in Psalm 58:2. “In your hearts you devise wrongs; your hands deal out violence on earth.”  The same is said in Mark 7:20-23.

There must be intervention at a young age for those prone to do evil, through counseling and anger management. However, that only deals with the symptoms. There must be a transformed heart and mind that doesn’t want to think and act in evil ways. This can only happen on the spiritual level, with God’s intervention, through the channel of his power and grace.

People need a Savior from their own destructive thinking and behavior. There must be deliverance from the thoughts and actions of human nature, and the taking on of a new character, “to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:23).

Biblical teaching does not change over time, from one generation to another, or from one culture to another. It has proven (in the words spoken several years ago) to be “safe and effective” when it comes to answering the question of why there is so much evil in the world, and the solution to it. In a recent discussion with coworkers about crime in my community, a person said that nothing works in putting a stop to it. Right on! Humanly speaking, nothing will be effective until there is a realization that it is a symptom of a sinful nature that can only be transformed by the power and grace of God.
