Discover Hope in the New Song “My Story” by Big Daddy Weave

Just when I finally think that I have this writing thing all figured out, I am stuck. S-T-U-C-K! Stuck! I can’t say it’s never happened before, but this time it is hitting me hard. Could I be becoming too comfortable—too overconfident–thinking I can just churn out a great article at the eleventh hour? Or is it that today I have just hit that proverbial “wall” (otherwise known as “writer’s block”) at the end of a very trying, emotional, roller coaster-like day? Writer’s block? Me? Say it ain’t so!

“Well, it ain’t so,” I speak boldly to The Block. “God has equipped me with the gift to write, and I am going to write!” That settles it. But what shall I write about? I need a message. A theme. A story. But today I am so tired, I don’t even feel like I have a story to tell, although I know, of course, that I do. God’s been too good!

Since I find joy in writing about music, I search my mind for some of my favorite songs that normally inspire me, and though there are plenty, none really seems to do the trick for me today. So I start to explore. But could I possibly be instantly inspired by a song that I have yet to even hear? I’m hunting. I’m searching. Lord, help me to find something to write about today. Help me to find a song that inspires me and says just what I want to say.

And then it hits me. I stumble across—okay, I feel I am led to—the web site of Big Daddy Weave, and what do I find but a message that says: “Watch the new ‘My Story’ music video.” Well, that certainly seems fitting, so I press play and what do I hear but the perfect lyrics to match what I am feeling at this moment in time.

“If I told you my story, you would hear hope that wouldn’t let go. If I told you my story, you would hear love that never gave up.” (Big Daddy Weave)

I continue to listen and I feel like, yes, this is my story. This song reminds me that if I speak at all, then I should speak of the grace, mercy and kindness that God has shown me. It says that to tell my story is really to tell of Him.

“My Story” is the first single from Big Daddy Weave’s soon to be released album, Beautiful Offerings (Fervent Records, September 18, 2015). I really love the gentle, yet pulsating flow of the music, and I totally relate to the messages within that remind me that, with God, I can overcome. I have freedom and I have the victory! Yes, victory over every block, every roller coaster, and every obstacle that threatens to steal my joy. It’s nothing but a trick of the enemy to try to steal my joy anyway, but God has the victory over that too! (John 10:10)

Yes, this is my story, and it can be your story too. Don’t let the threats of the enemy keep you from achieving your own victory. Don’t get lost in trying to figure out what your story is, how to tell it, and what it all really means anyway. The Bible says that Jesus is the “author and finisher of [your] faith.” (Hebrews 12:2) He knows His purposes and plans for your life, and so indeed already knows your story.

Well, that certainly helps me feel better about my own life, and I hope it does the same for you. So if you’re frazzled like me but on your way to victory, take some time out to listen to a story that might likely be your very own.

What is your story? What gives you hope when it feels like nothing is going right?
