Besides church attendance soaring, so also our Bible sales. 10 million have been sold so year.
If you have purchased one for the first time, this article will reveal to you facts about the Bible. Also see my article entitled, The Bible-for first time readers. It will help you to know how to proceed with your Bible reading.
Fact number one. Much of the Old Testament plus the four gospels of the New Testament and the Book of Acts are backed up by archaeological finds, proving that there were literal places and events given in the Bible. There are too many to list here, but simple research will reveal many examples.
Fact number two. There is cohesion and unity throughout the Bible. Even though it was written by many different human authors over a span of 1500 years, there are central threads and themes that run throughout. Overall, it is based on the sinfulness of humanity and the redemption offered by the Savior Jesus. However, there is one author, God, who inspired the human authors to compose the words. 2 Peter 1:21 says, “ No prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” The divine inspiration of the Bible is backed up by fact number three.
Fact number three. There is fulfilled prophecy. Much of it has already been fulfilled and more is yet to be fulfilled. Some is being fulfilled right now in our current events. Bible prophecy has never been wrong to the exact detail. One third of the Bible is prophetic. It talks a lot about the future of humanity and the world, especially the Book of Revelation.
Fact number four. The Bible gives the reason for the condition of human nature and all the evil in the world. See Isaiah 53:6, Romans 3:23, Jeremiah 17:9, and James 4:1-2.
Fact number five. There is much wisdom and practical advice for daily living, and it addresses areas like relationships, marriage, character qualities, true love, family, success, and many more topics. “Some assume the Bible is an inaccessible, impractical book. But the Bible couldn’t be more practical, as it is grounded in actual history involving real human beings, their trials and tribulations, and their relationship with God. Yes, the Bible includes philosophy and instruction, but it is also a history book that reveals God’s truths through the experiences of real-life people.” (1)
As much as one can learn from the Bible, what is more important is having a personal relationship with its author, God, through accepting Jesus as one’s personal Savior. When this happens, you will be indwelt by the Holy Spirit who will guide you as you study the inspired Word of God. I Corinthians 2:11-12 says, “No one comprehends the thoughts of God, except the spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the spirit who is from God that we might understand the things freely given us by God.”
Some have called the Bible the “handbook for life.” As you read it more and more you realize how true that statement is. It is able to not just give you practical wisdom and truth for living, but also what will happen in the future. If you have purchased a Bible for the first time, or are reading it for the first time, you can rest assured that you are reading a divinely inspired manuscript that will not only help you in your life, but will give you the plan of salvation to save your soul for all eternity.
