How Is Your Spiritual Health?

I recently had my an annual wellness check up with my physician. Prior to that I had my lab work done. It always amazes me how much a sample of blood can tell about the physical health of the body. It reveals how well parts of the body are functioning, among many other things that are important to optimum health. It is all printed out so the doctor can tell everything about you. This shows how important our blood is to our physical body. Praise the Lord, I am in excellent health at the age of 76!

This got me to thinking about spiritual health. How do we find out about that? What constitutes spiritual wellness? First of all, we are all sinners in need of God‘s grace. Mark 2:17 says, “those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick, I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

We find out how spiritually sick we are from reading  God‘s word. Hebrews 4:12 says,For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of the spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” This verse mentions the soul and the spirit, and the joints and marrow. Marrow is a medical term which refers to the soft tissue inside the cavities of the bones, responsible for producing blood cells. Doctors use bone marrow tests for diagnosing blood disorders and other conditions.

The word of God penetrates the thoughts and intentions of the heart, not the physical heart, but the spiritual heart. Jeremiah 17:9 tells us that “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick, who can understand it? Hebrews 4:13 indicates that God has a “spiritual MRI machine” because, “No creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”

So, how is your spiritual health? Are you taking daily doses of spiritual food from the Word of God? Are you seeking to use His “prescriptions” found in the Bible? How is your heart for God? We should all make the words of Psalm 51:10 our prayer. “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

Now getting back to the importance of blood. Jesus gave his “blood samples” at the cross for our sins. His blood revealed how badly we all need a savior and healer from the sickness of our sin. However, because of that- a person can be declared righteous by God, for those who accept Jesus as their Savior. “Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God”(Romans 5:9).

Call upon the Great Physician. He has come to save you from the punishment of your sin and give you spiritual healing. He will forgive you of your sins and give you a new life and fellowship with God.

  1. Hi John,

Good to hear your wellness exam went well! Praise God!

This was a good reminder for many and we should never forget who the Great Physician is.
I’ve witnessed many of my patients in nursing homes come back from what the doctor’s called “no hope final days countdown” to family’s praying and believing. When the doctor’s say “no” God says “YES!”

    Thanks for this important message.

    God Bless~

  2. great blessings john

  3. Jesus is the only One who can do it all for all people. His blood brings healing and newness that is everlasting.
In comparison with the efforts of people who are willing to offer their stem cells, kidneys, etc. as a match for people who have afflicted health conditions to give hope for these patients; it is only for a limited period of time that it can help.
As kind as it may be to the world, it doesn’t prevent the truth that we will still die. Do those who read this want just the temporary life or eternal as well?
Only Jesus can save us completely! Thanks for your time given to put together this article.
