1 Corinthians 9
24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
What will You Give Up To Win The Prize?
There was a big boxing match in the UK, you may have seen it, the Ukrainian fighter beat the British fighter by knockout, he has beaten three British fighters, all who are taller and are heavier than him.
Yesterday, I saw his training, now some of you like to go to the gym and exercise, but some of the things, he did, took my breath away.
He lifted weights that would kill me if I tried, he took all his time to train for the fight.
He sought and won the prize, which was the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, he is now the best of the best.
But it comes at a cost, this training takes him away from his family, his wife and three young children, in training for one of his last fights, his daughter was born, he never saw her birth, what dedication to his sport.
As Christians, we seek not earthly glory but a divine prize, this man is seeking a corruptible crown, we are seeking a crown that is incorruptible, but we won’t give up any comfort to win it.
Will we go to church if its raining?
Will we get up early to seek God?
Will we read and study our bibles, instead of sitting for hours watching TV or browsing social media?
You say that you want to win the prize, but a bit like me, we don’t want to pay the price.
Paul in Philippians 3, gave us this great insight:
8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
Later this year, my friend David is going to Everest base camp at 21,000, this is high altitude, so he is training for this, sacrificing for it.
He walks the south coast path, twenty miles each day, last year I followed his example, I walked ten miles one day and was completely exhausted, maybe because I won’t sacrifice like he does.
Unbelievers really do put us to shame, they sacrifice everything for worldly pleasure and pursuit, but Christians think that going to one service on Sunday is enough, FORGET IT!
Jesus said these words in Luke 14, “lets keep them in mind my dear brothers and sisters.”
26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?
29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,
30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
