The Heart That Inclines Toward Him

Psalm 110:36 Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.

This quiet plea from the psalmist reveals a profound truth: the heart does not naturally lean toward God — it must be inclined. Loving God with all the heart begins with asking Him to bend our desires toward Him and away from the lesser things that compete for our affection.

The psalmist recognizes that love for God is not passive. It is shaped, directed, and strengthened by His Word. When we ask God to incline our hearts, we are acknowledging our dependence on Him to reorder our loves.

Covetousness — the craving for what is not ours — is the opposite of loving God fully. It scatters the heart. But when God inclines our heart toward His testimonies, our love becomes unified, focused, and whole.

Reflection Question

Where is my heart leaning today — toward God, or toward something lesser?

My heart, O Lord, would drift and stray, Chasing the noise of another day; But when You whisper soft and true, My wandering soul turns back to You.

The world may glitter, loud and bright, yet fades before Your holy light; For only You can satisfy, The deepest longing tucked inside.

So bend my heart, reshape its will, Teach it to trust, to wait, be still; Let every beat, in quiet grace, Lean toward the warmth of Your embrace.

When lesser loves would pull me near, And shadows rise to stir my fear; Draw me again, with mercy new, To walk the path that leads to You.

And as I grow in love refined, Lord, keep my trembling heart inclined; For all my days and all I do, Let every breath be lived for You. In Jesus name, Amen.

  1. Who doesn’t want a healthy heart, when we are speaking of our organ. But many people don’t think enough about the inward ways of its desires that hides corruption on many levels. They just allow the evil intents to control the mind and actions that proceed from within not realizing how sick it is.
The poem you shared is a heart being put back together and filled with His presence and power to replace the corruption due to our sin nature that came about from the deception
Only the Lord can replace and repair our inward ways; the heart that was given to mankind in the beginning. Oh that people realize that there is a twofold analogy in life regarding the heart.
Life is in the blood and it is the heart that makes it flow through our veins and then there is eternal life because of Christ who shed His blood to bring new life that is eternal and needs to course through our lives. This is the cure for the curse so the inward man can be restored to perfection once again.
The bottom line is do you want to be made whole again? If yes, then look to the Redeemer who is Jesus and believe on Him and receiving His sacrifice on your behalf for your heart’s sake. You will find peace, joy, hope, and so much more than you will ever know when you come to Him!.
