Jesus' greatness demonstrated by His humility

The Humility Of God

Looking down from the top of the tallest building I had ever seen or entered, I trembled.  My fear of heights made me shaky.  This Southland Life building in downtown Dallas in 1962, was billed as the tallest building west of the Mississippi River.  It stood 42 stories and 550 feet tall.  As I peered down from inside the guard rails, the cars were like little toy cars I had played with as a child, and the people hurrying along the sidewalks looked like ants scrambling after someone had kicked their nest.

The astronauts on the Apollo missions described Earth as “a glowing blue and white orb hanging in the void of space.”  Of course, the astronauts could not see any humans from that distance.

The unknown writer of Psalm 113 declared, “The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens.  Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high, Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the Earth!  (Psalm 113:4-6)

David expressed his wonder with these words, “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;  What is man, that thou art mindful of him?  and the son of man, that thou visitest him?  (Psalm 8:3-4).

Isaiah the prophet saw the Lord high and lifted up and cried out, “Woe is me!  For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.”  (Isaiah 6:5).  The apostle John saw the glorified Son of man in Revelation 1:13-16.  When he saw him, he fell at his feet as dead.

This is the same God who was the Word of John 1.  “The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory.” (John 1:14)

The Creator of the universe came to Earth and said, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” (Luke 9:58).

This  Son of Man “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:28)

Jesus served when he “poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.”  (John 13:5)

Jesus was the weary traveler, who, “being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: (John 4:6).

Jesus knew human sorrow when confronted with the loss of his friend, Lazarus, and wept.  (John 11:35)

He was the One whom the soldiers crucified like a common criminal between two robbers.  (Matthew 27:38).

This was the loving, compassionate Savior who invited us, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28).

This is the giver of life that said through the Spirit, “Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.”  (Revelation 22:17).

“For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.” (2 Corinthians 8:9).

This was Christ Jesus who “made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.  “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in Earth, and things under the Earth;  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.  (Philippians 2:7-11).

This is my Jesus who loves me and loves you enough to leave the greatness, the glory, the power, and the majesty of Heaven to come to Earth and die for you and me.  He took the burden and guilt of my sin and yours so we could be forgiven and be assured of an eternal place in Heaven.

He is inviting you today.  Will you receive Him as your Lord and Savior?
