Truth or Lie?

Truth matters but it is a nebulous thing in our world today; Scripture is never hazy about truth!  A partial truth—a lie—destroyed paradise.  Partial truths ruin relationships, fracture families and dishonor Jesus Christ, the Truth.  In our journey through names of Christ, we will pause today to look at Him as the Faithful Witness of Revelation 1:5; 3:14).  Truth is not nebulous for the Christian.

A recent court case dodged the question of whether legislating truth in political advertisements is valid or not.  The Supreme Court, in supporting the right of the Susan B. Anthony List to file a suit against an Ohio Law demanding truth in advertising, fired another round in the on-going battles of First Amendment Free Speech rights.   As Christians, our allegiance is to total truth.  From the Ten Commandments to the Revelation of John, false and faithful witnesses are clearly delineated.  Falsehoods are the natural language of the devil; we do not need the government to legislate that for us.   Determining truth is our responsibility.

Social Media transports truth and lies with blinding speed. Often we share without verifying accuracy or understanding all of the dynamics of a story.  As friends of the Truth, we must not carelessly share falsehoods and partial truths.  Numerous websites exist to help us sort through what is said and the various factors that give clarity to statements.  Truth or Fiction, Snopes and Fact Check are a few of the larger sites.  Even if the facts are true, we ought to filter our decisions about sharing through Ephesians 4:29. When an insightful (or incite-full) piece looms in front of us, let us look first to Jesus (the Faithful Witness) before we choose to be a witness for it.

Jesus, our example as the Faithful Witness, continually looked toward the Father.  He did what witnesses do:  He saw the work of the Father and spoke of it.  That is our job too!  We are not to look at the works of the devil and broadcast them.  We are to use the eyes of Christ to see His Father’s hand in our lives, in others’ lives and speak life.   Only the pure in heart see God, so if our eyes are blinded to His work and the world seems dark, we need some time in His presence letting His forgiveness heal our hearts and restore our sight.  Let us be witnesses who broadcast the Good News!

  1. What a great reminder. ..He did what a witness should do: He saw the work of the Father and spoke of it. Thanks for the reminder. I’m impacted by that truth. Thanks.

    • Stephanie…computers are so funny :). I came on to thank you for that sweet note only to see a comment from me (dated a month ago) that already says that. You know, as a writer, that’s are our hearts’ desire is always to touch another, so thanks!

  2. Should we go to church Saturday then as we should remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy? Pretty much every calender has Saturday down as the 7th day of the week.

    • Hi, Marcus. Thanks for reading and commenting. The Truth I honor in regard to Sabbath is that worship is a continual thing…we, as individuals, are the Church. When we gather together for corporate worship is a matter of tradition and culture. We are called to holiness every minute of every day. A day of rest is a principle God established…and something I need to do a better job of honoring :). Honor the calendar day that God presses on your heart. Great chapter to let speak to you surrounds this verse:

Romans 14:5 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

      Blessings, Billie Jo

    • Setting aside a day to keep holy and going to church are entirely two different things. The Ten Commandments never said a person needs to go to church on the seventh day. A person can go to church and still do other “unholy” things on that day. Actually, I read in a book by a Jewish rabbi that there were 39 prohibitions for the Sabbath, most of which were passed down orally by Moses. With that in mind how can anyone truly keep a Sabbath?

      • I see Sabbath as rest that honors the sovereignty of God…a day of whole-focused worship of the One who has it all under control. So my question would be, how can we not keep a day for that? 🙂

        • I agree with you BillieJo. We should and can have a day of rest and focus. Some people, however, have made it into a day of legalism and requirements.

  3. Wow, I don’t think I could have said this better, and I have a LOT to say about Truth vs. lies/deception (just ask my husband and daughter!!)! I agree with everything I read in this article, and from what I can tell, I read every word. 🙂 PREACH! For Jesus IS the Truth and yes, our allegiance IS TO TRUTH!!! GOD BLESS!

  4. Such a well written article. God bless.
