When Purity Became Unfashionable

MBatt 5:8 lessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Reflection: There was a time when purity was prized. Modesty was admired. Restraint was a sign of wisdom. But today, purity is often mocked. Modesty is labeled outdated. Restraint is seen as repression. The world has shifted, and what was once sacred is now stigmatized.

Young people are pressured to perform, not preserve. Elders who speak of holiness are dismissed as irrelevant. Even within faith communities, the pursuit of purity is sometimes seen as naïve. But the Word of God has not changed. The pure in heart shall see God. That promise remains.

Purity is not perfection—it is intention. It is the quiet choice to guard one’s heart, to speak with grace, to walk in light. It is not about being flawless, but about being faithful. In a world that celebrates exposure, purity is a form of holy rebellion. It is a light that cannot be dimmed. It is indeed a light that is seen and embraced – and can be a powerful witness for others. It is a glow that resonates with others and warms your soul as it transcends across barriers of ill repute and iniquitous actions. It is a pathway for submission to the LORD and His will. Purity is something that will NEVER go out of style, irrespective of what the “world may say or do.”

Let us reclaim purity—not as a burden, but as a blessing. Let us teach it, live it, and honor it. For in purity, we see God—not just in eternity, but in everyday moments of clarity, peace, and Divine Presence.

“LORD, help us to walk in purity, even when the world mocks it. Let our hearts be clean, our words be seasoned, and our lives reflect Your holiness. Teach us to value what You value, and to resist the pull of culture that distorts Your truth. May our pursuit of purity be a light in dark places, and may we see You more clearly as we walk in Your ways. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

  1. Well-spoken and a message that should speak to every Christian’s heart. As we see God’s holiness we should strive to be holy as He is (1 Peter 1:16). As we look forward to His coming, “Every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.” (1 John 3:3).

Thanks for an eloquent expression of what purity should be in our lives.

  2. Your article is so right. This is a part of our spiritual battle. What is right has been turned into wrong as people use mockery in order to control those who haven’t conformed to their standards. They don’t understand that they have been manipulated so they go forth to deceive others. This can either make them feel superior or perhaps less guilty about their own activities that bring harm their way with time.
Even taking this into the college arena where Christians are singled out for their beliefs. All the more when professors get in the act to do this nasty attempt to humiliate students which has nothing to do with them being there to get an education.
It’s like having a target on our backs meant to strike at and defeat those who delight in clean living by rightful choices.
Yet, those who choose to follow their Lord find deliverance through Him and are rewarded.
When we are still in our youth, we are easy pry to worldly ways. All the more to draw near to God and learn from the book of wisdom and truth; the Bible.
So important for parents to know and share lovingly the word of God daily with examples in life that get their attention so they can make wise choices for their lives.
