Matthew 8
8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.
9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel
GOD’S PROMISES ARE ENOUGH
The story of the centurion’s servant is outlined in these verses and also in Luke chapter 7.
Why did Jesus marvel at the Centurion? Why did He say the words He did in verse 10?
After all this man was a Gentile. While he loved the Jewish nation, he was still an outcast in terms of his relationship with God.
To see why his faith made Jesus marvel, we need to look carefully at the words in verse 8, “just speak the word and my servant shall be healed.” He didn’t need to have Jesus in his house; the Centurion had complete confidence in Christ’ ability to heal.
He knew who Jesus was and that his words had power and life. And one word from the Saviour was all that was needed to heal his servant.
What is faith?.. faith is defined in Hebrews 11 as:
11 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
This is probably one of the best examples of faith in the whole Bible, the Centurion believed in Jesus and His power to heal; he put complete trust in Him.
Faith is not faith if we can see it. Faith is believing God. Consider Abraham. Although Abraham couldn’t see how he was going to be the father of nations, he still believed the promise God had made to him.
Do you want to grow in your faith? Let the words of the Centurion echo in your heart…”but speak the word only.”
What this means in practical terms, is that God only has to promise it, and you have just to believe in his promise.
God’s Word is enough for you believer. Stand on His promises for they cannot fail. Faith is not blind, it is launching out, because you know the One who is in charge is faithful and true…promise-keeping God.
God bless you.
His promises are indestructible and infallible and never fail to bring forth what is best for all of us!
Amen!
