When We All Get To Heaven

My wife and I are enjoying our “Sunset” years. As we are both in our mid-eighties, we are very conscious of God’s extraordinary grace to us – for salvation, for opportunities to serve,  and for our level of health and longevity. Although we are hoping and praying for that Blessed Hope – the Rapture, at the same time, we are preparing in the event of our deaths before the Rapture. We inevitably become well acquainted with our primary care doctor, our cardiologist, pulmonologist, urologist, podiatrist, and our lawyer. We have prepared legal documents with DNRs, wills, medical power of attorney, and durable power of attorney. Really exciting stuff!!??

But most of all, we are thankful that early in life we both trusted Christ as Savior, making sure of our eternal destiny. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16). And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.” (John 10:28-29)

We are also grateful that God has allowed us to serve Him for these many years. Paul expressed it this way. “Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power. Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;  And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: (Ephesians 3:7-9). While our ministry and outreach would never come near the outreach and effectiveness of Paul’s ministry, we are thankful for the ministries God has given us.

As we look forward to heaven, we rejoice in the delightful gospel song titled

When We All Get To Heaven

Sing the wondrous love of Jesus,
Sing his mercy and his grace;
In the mansions, bright and blessed,
He’ll prepare for us a place!           John 14:2

Refrain:
When we all get to heaven,
what a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,                                 Revelation 4:11; 5:9;19:7-9)
we’ll sing and shout the victory!

2 While we walk the pilgrim pathway
Clouds will overspread the sky.
But when trav’ling days are over
Not a shadow, not a sigh. [Refrain]   (2 Corinthians 4:17)

3 Let us then be true and faithful,
Trusting, serving ev’ry day;
Just one glimpse of Him in glory
Will the toils of life repay. [Refrain]   (1 John 3:2)

4 Onward to the prize before us! (Philippians  3:14, Hebrews 12:1-2)
Soon His beauty we’ll behold;    (Revelations  22:4).
Soon the pearly gates will open–
We shall tread the streets of gold. [Refrain]   (Revelation 21:21)

The writer of this song, Eliza Hewitt, was born in 1851 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After graduating from high school and the Girls’ Normal School, she became a public school teacher. While supervising students on the playground, she suffered a severe back injury, forcing her to spend several months in bed and to endure pain the rest of her life.

The Lord ministered to her while recovering. She chose not to be resentful. She studied Literature and English, which God was going to use significantly in the years ahead.

Some years later, being able to get around slowly, she attended a summer Methodist Camp meeting in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. There she met and became friends with a pastor’s wife, Emily D. Wilson. Together, they created this hymn, When We All Get to Heaven.” No doubt that her suffering made her long for heaven. The song was a testimony of her yearning for her Savior and for heaven. She went on to write many more hymns, most of which were intended for children in Sunday School.

Among her best-known songs are “When We All Get to Heaven,” “Sunshine in My Soul,” and “More About Jesus Would I Know.”

Eliza was deeply interested in children and ministering to them through Sunday school. She superintended a Sunday School for the Northern Home for Friendless Children and then later the same type of ministry for Calvin Presbyterian Church.

Eliza died in 1920.

“When We All Get to Heaven”  is a favorite song of ours that is often on our minds, hearts, and voices. What a day that will be when we see Jesus, and we will sing and shout the victory.

Are you ready for that day? Do you know if you died today, you would go to be with Jesus in heaven?

If not, you can settle that question. At the top of this  website page is a link titled, “The Romans Road Plan to Salvation.” Click on that link, read carefully, and then take action.

About Dale B

I am a born-again Christian who loves to write and share the Good News about Jesus. Raised on a small Wisconsin farm and saved at age 12, I have been active in Christian service since that time. My many years as a pastor, accountant, and lay worker in the church have equipped me to help those in need. In retirement now in Texas, the Lord has led me to writing as a means of winning people to Christ and helping Christians grow in the Lord. By God’s grace I hope to be a blessing and encouragement to you.

  1. A wonderful testimony you have given about your own personal experiences in ministry as well as the ministry of a woman who was faithfully involved in many children’s lives. What a blessing to be able to write songs that are personable in one’s life that brings glory to the Lord.
I remember getting on a bus that took me from the outskirts of our home into a downtown area to the church we attended during vacation Bible school in the evening hours. It was a lengthy drive to go to this church but it was where my parents met each other and where her parent’s place of worship was while she was growing up.
I am thankful that someone was willing to go way out of their way to drive us to and from VBS. My parents weren’t able to drive us back and forth for that five day event.
And especially for those volunteers who were there to share the word of God so that others could hear and respond to the message of salvation.
I was about the age of 9 and a bit scared not to get back on bus in time before it left the church, yet wanting to linger after the class was being dismissed because I wanted to hear more about Christ and how to become a child of God.
I was quit a shy person so to talk to the teacher about this important issue without other kids around her was challenging for me to speak up and get her undivided attention. The Lord was speaking to me and I wanted to understand how to be saved.
I became burdened in my soul the next day about my sinful ways but I delayed saying anything until the last day of VBS. It seemed like my last chance.
In desperation I felt it was my final attempt to speak up so this could be settled for I knew I needed Christ to come into my heart.
I took that chance and shared my concerns with the teacher and she assured me first of all that I would make it onto the bus so I could put that to rest about getting back home and she explained to me about the need to come to Christ and confess that I was a sinner in need of being saved by His shed blood.
Well she told me to pray to Him but I didn’t really know what to say exactly. Was there necessary words to say in order to repent and invite Christ to wash me and come in my heart? I sat there nervously with my head bowed trying to think how to say this. I knew that Christ could see my sincerity even without saying it out loud.
If I knew what to say, as though it had to be said with just the right words in my thoughts , then I would have responded sooner in private to confess my sinful ways and receive Him.
Thus I couldn’t wait to get back to the church and I kept talking to myself to not be afraid so I could make this decision in time before He comes again.
Well I was so excited as I headed to the bus for Jesus was now within my heart and I was safely going back home to my relief.
I looked out the window at the starry night as I sat on the bus and I said to myself that someday I will be going to Jesus’ house up beyond those stars twinkling like jewels in the dark sky.
For those who are in Christ, none will be left behind as He has secured you.
For others, please seek Him. He is waiting for you to come and be saved and have a new dwelling place way beyond those stars that light the way upwards.

  2. Dale,

Wow! This was a powerful piece and witness for the LORD! Amen!
Thank you so much for sharing this excellent “Word” that pulsated with light and love for God, and enormous testimony to His grace and mercy.

    God Bless~
