3. Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.
4. Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practise wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their dainties.
GUARDING OUR MOUTHS
Did you know that the average person opens their mouth 700 times a day to speak? (SOME OF US OPEN IT A LOT MORE.) That is amazing.
No wonder David prayed like he did in verse 3. In verses following, David talks about being criticised: if anyone was high profile in Israel it was him. So, when he was criticised, he really felt like answering back. I know I do, and I have, to my shame and regret.
Setting a watch on our mouth is very important. It says in James that the tongue is an unruly evil and a fire: the Great Fire of London started in a small way in a shop, and the Great Fire of Chicago started when a cow kicked over a paraffin (kerosene) lamp; so you can see how much damage an untamed tongue can do! It can and has wrecked relationships, families, and yes, even split churches.
Verse 4 is also a forthright prayer. David not only doesn’t want to say anything wrong, he doesn’t want to do anything wrong either. He wants to walk with God and not to walk with the world; he wants to live in communion with God. In PSALM 1 he says the same thing: he is concerned that he will not walk in the way of sinners.
These things are here to caution us –they are to be our constant prayer. If it was good enough for David to pray, surely it should be good enough for us to pray, and indeed to walk in that we wouldn’t do or say anything wrong and hurt our Father.
May this be our prayer!
God bless you
