What Are You Reaping?

It’s amazing what you get from just a few seeds! One corn plant usually produces one large ear of corn—with between 800-1200 kernels on that one ear. Planting just one zucchini plant, usually with 3-4 seeds, produces enough zucchini to feed an average family for a season. And the next time you’re enjoying some crunchy sunflower seeds just remember that one field of the bright yellow flowers can produce 1800 pounds of those seeds! Just a few tiny seeds, dropped in the right kind of soil, produce much more of the same crop…

In this world, there is a law of sowing and reaping. We can pretend it isn’t there if we choose not to believe God’s Word, but its effects are all around us. Simply put, we all receive back what we give out. Just like a farmer planting seed for corn will get a crop of corn–much more than what he planted–so we will receive back more than what we give. If we sow to the flesh we reap “ruin, decay, and destruction.” But if we sow to the spirit we reap life. When we are in the midst of sowing (planting) by our actions, we seldom stop to think of the “harvest” we will eventually reap. This is true whether we are sowing in sin to our flesh through selfishness, greed, or anger, or sowing to our spirit by obeying God’s Word in our lives. Sin brings pleasure for a season, and doing the right thing often brings pain initially. But God promises that we will always get back what we sow, and we will get back more–just like a farmer who plants a field of seed.

Because of His great love for us, God gives warnings to us throughout His Word that we will receive back what we give. Galatians 6:7 warns: “Don’t be misled; remember that you can’t ignore God and get away with it! A man will always reap just the kind of crop he sows!” (Living Bible)
The choice is ours–with each and every seed we sow.
