There is a huge amount of interest in the launch of Artemis II which will return astronauts to the moon after 50 years since the Apollo missions. This generation does not know about that, but the older generation remembers it quite well. They will be going farther away from Planet Earth than anyone has ever gone, but it is only a little step compared to God‘s vast universe.
The Bible has much to say about space. Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”
In reference to the earth and moon, the purpose of them is explained in Genesis 1:14-18. God, the Creator, said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years. And let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth, and it was so. And God made the two great lights, the greater light to the rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night, and the stars. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth.”
The earth is hung in space (Job 26:7) and God, who’s throne is in heaven, uses the earth as his footstool (Isaiah 66:1), a rather humorous portrayal of God‘s sovereignty over the cosmos.
Colossians 1:16-17 says, “for by God, all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible…and he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” Psalm 74:16-17 adds, “Yours is the day also the night. You have established the heavenly lights and the sun. You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth…”
Not only do the heavens declare the glory of God’s creation, but also astronauts of previous space missions. Doug Wheelock, aboard the International Space Station in 1971, said, “I am convinced that it would require an unimaginable amount of faith to believe that all of this happened just by chance… It looks more like brush strokes from the master’s hand.”
In my opinion, because some astronauts have given public acknowledgment of God in space, I think God‘s divine hand has been on our space program. Even the ill-fated Apollo 13 was a miracle of divine intervention. A NASA warning system engineer said, “An unrehearsed script seemed to be guiding the drama.” I also wonder if God in heaven is smiling on humanity in exploring his creation of space. If you are a follower of the Artemis II moon mission, remember the creator of it all.
One of the most outspoken astronauts was James Irwin of Apollo 15. He said, “I feel the Lord sent me to the moon so that I could return to the earth and share His Son, Jesus Christ. God walking on the earth is more important than men walking on the moon.”
God came down from heaven to earth to redeem humanity. “Though he was in the form of God…He was born in the likeness of men” (Phil. 2:6-7).
Do you know the God in the person of Jesus Christ, who walked upon the earth? If not, you can accept him as your Savior today!
