The Journey Of Bingo: From Origins To Charitable Joy

I thought about writing this article after visiting several senior ladies in a local nursing home- who were expressing joy at the upcoming bingo game after lunch. Something that was always a popular choice in the nursing home I worked for.  Sure, younger people enjoy it, but a good majority, in my experience, have been the elderly. It engages socializing aspects, while challenging cognitive levels and opts for a good time in the interim thereby making their serotonin and endorphins surge!

So here comes the article that was brewing in my mind, hope you enjoy it!

The Birth of Bingo

Once upon a time in 16th century Italy, a game called “Il Gioco del Lotto d’Italia” began captivating its players. Every Saturday, avid enthusiasts gathered to play this early version of what we now know as Bingo. From Italy, the game journeyed to France in the late 1700s where it gained a new name, “Le Lotto” It became a favored pastime among the wealthy French society.

In the early 20th century, Bingo found its way to North America, introduced by a traveling toy salesman, Edwin S. Lowe. The game was first called “Beano,” played with beans to mark numbers. One fateful day, in the excitement of winning, a player accidentally yelled out “Bingo!” And thus, the name stuck.

The simplicity and excitement of Bingo quickly spread across the United States, reaching every nook and cranny—from bustling city centers to serene countryside. Churches and charitable organizations soon realized the potential of Bingo to raise funds. Its appeal lay not just in the thrill of the game but in its ability to bring communities together.

Bingo in Nursing Homes

Bingo gained immense popularity among the elderly, especially within nursing homes. It became a cherished activity, offering not only entertainment but also significant health benefits. It provided mental stimulation, improved cognitive functions, and enhanced social interactions—creating a sense of belonging among residents.

Reflective Questions and Scriptures

As we reflect on the journey of Bingo, we can ponder:

How does the simple act of playing a game foster community and joy?
In what ways can we use leisure activities to honor God and serve others?

Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

Contributions to Charities and Churches

Bingo has become a powerful tool for fundraising in various churches and charities. It provides a fun way to generate resources for projects and causes, often with proceeds going to support mission work, community outreach programs, and local shelters. The joy of playing Bingo is amplified by the knowledge that one’s participation is making a positive difference in the world.

The Question of Gambling

For some, the concept of Bingo might raise questions about gambling. Is it Christian to engage in such activities? While Bingo involves chance, it’s often viewed more as recreational rather than gambling—especially within the context of charitable events. The intent behind the game is crucial.

1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

When played with a heart focused on fellowship and charity, Bingo transcends its mere mechanics and becomes a means to glorify God through community and generosity.

Recreation in Nursing Homes

The benefits of recreational activities in nursing homes are profound. Engaging in Bingo not only brings laughter but also aids in cognitive retention, enhances memory, and provides essential social interaction.

Conclusion with Scriptures and Prayer:

Colossians 3:23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.

Galatians 6:2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

A Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the joy and fellowship that games like Bingo bring into our lives. May we always use our leisure time to honor You and serve others. Bless those who organize and participate in such events, that they may continue to spread love, joy, and support throughout their communities. Guide us in all that we do, that our actions may always glorify Your name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

This story not only highlights the historical journey of Bingo but also emphasizes its deeper significance in fostering community, supporting charities, and enhancing the lives of the elderly.
