Give Your All For Christ.

1 Corinthians 1:30  — But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

What kinds of things is Paul dealing with in writing this particular book of the bible?

1 Corinthians was of course written by Paul. -The city of Corinth at the time was a busy trade hub. So, this city is a perfect place for the Gospel to spread to many people. Merchants traveling through there would stay a few days then be back on their way to wherever they came from. It was likely that Paul’s preaching would be all the more memorable because at that time in Corinth all kinds of so-called intellectuals and philosophers were filling the city bringing with them their “wisdom”. It was a morally corrupt wisdom.

One commentary I read said this ” The ideal of the Corinthian was the reckless development of the individual.” So, what was Paul trying to overcome in writing 1 Corinthians? Much of the same things we see today. The man centered wisdom that is being promoted everywhere to everyone at all times. So this is very relatable to what we are fighting here today. The heart of man does not change throughout the ages. The Church in Corinth was in the world as it had to be, but the world was also in it.

Ok back to the text.

Verse 30 starts; 30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

Or in other words, But by his doing. It’s By God’s doing that we are in Christ Jesus. This merits no one else but God with our conversions.

The phrase ‘in Christ’ is used numerous times in Paul’s writings. It’s a relatable phrase that kind of lumps all believers together. If we are in Christ we are not in the world. We’re not to be bound by the worldly things that distract us from God. The wisdom of God is found in Christ.

In Colossians 2 3 he says — In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Verse continues on, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption

Wisdom is knowledge applied. Our knowledge comes through reading the word of God. The wisdom is seen when we apply that knowledge in our lives in everything we do.

Righteousness, this is our personally being justified through Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:21  — For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Sanctification is an ongoing process. It starts after redemption.

2 Thessalonians 2:13  — But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

We are redeemed by God through Christ

Ephesians 1:7  — In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Through Christ’s redeeming work on the cross we can accomplish the tasks set before us. Each one of us has been given particular gifts to use for God’s glory. When we lean on His Word, we are better able to complete those tasks.

Don’t neglect time in the word, it’s all we need.
