In a recent quote from Franklin Graham in reference to current events the words, “spirit of lawlessness” were mentioned. It is a sign of the last days of the church age of grace. Matthew 24:12 says in the last days, “Lawlessness will increase and the love of many will grow cold.” Second Thessalonians 2:3 adds that rebellion will come, and the man of lawlessness will be revealed.” This refers to the antichrist, and we are getting closer by the day.
For sure, the world’s culture is experiencing a spiritual battle between righteousness and evil. There is much activity of Satan as expressed in II Thess. 2:9, and in the final days of this age, evil people will get worse and worse.
The big question that has kept some people from belief in God is, why is there so much evil in the world? This goes back to Genesis 4:1-7 where the first murder in history is recorded. Cain killed Abel out of anger. He was angry because God accepted Abel’s offering to God, but had no regard for his, because Cain’s heart was not right with God (Hebrews 11:4). Another reason for evil is that Cain did not deal with his anger. Genesis 4:7 says Cain was told by God that he must rule over his anger. Instead, he allowed it to boil over, and as a result it got the worst of him. That is why we are told in Ephesians 4:26-27 to not allow anger to carry over from one day to the next. Unresolved anger can lead to hatred, and hatred can then lead to evil acts.
A third reason for evil is disregard for God. Romans 1:21 says, “For although people knew God, they did not honor him as God or give things to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” Romans 1:28 says that as a result “God gave them up to debased mind to do what ought not to be done.”A debased mind is defined as a state of moral corruption and intellectual distortion where an individual having rejected God becomes incapable of sound judgment and righteous behavior, rejecting divine truth and living in spiritual blindness.
The consequences of this are listed in Romans 1:28-32. The list, too numerous to mention here, includes murder, inventors of evil, haters of God, heartless, and ruthless. These are things we are seeing in our culture today.
There is something inherently wrong with human nature, isn’t there, that make people want to choose to be angry and hateful, leading to evil acts. People are living in deception and darkness about the truth concerning themselves.
There is a sinful nature. The world desperately needs the transforming power of God‘s grace to overcome evil and lawlessness, as expressed in Titus 2:11. “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self -controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age.”If you want to experience God‘s grace click on “The Roman’s Road to Salvation” at the top.
