How Would You Describe Your Spiritual Journey?

Recently I wrote my spiritual journey. It highlights things God has done in my life and opened doors for ministry. There have been emotional valleys and “mountaintop”experiences. My life has crossed with influential people who have set me on a path of music and writing. At times I have had experiences that have left me wandering in a “spiritual wilderness.”

There were strongholds of wrong thinking that held me back resulting in a settle-for-less life. Much of my belief system had not worked. I had read my Bible and prayed for years, but still had the same problems of low self-esteem, anger and many other issues. The most compelling situation in my life was finding out why, especially as a Christian, I had all of these problems. I simply could not go on living happily with myself- and as a staff member at local churches- without having some answers. I just really needed to know the causes of my problems to get my life on track to seeing positive change.

I have been through depression, sicknesses, broken dreams, treated unjustly by some churches, and have been through years of Christian counseling for emotional and relational issues. Negative things that have happened to me in my past have kept coming back into my mind. I’ve had struggles like the apostle Paul mentioned in Romans 7:15-20.

However, through all that I have mentioned, God’s grace and provision has brought me through some extremely difficult economic and emotional times. He has spared my life on some occasions. He has opened up ministry opportunities to speak to the helpless, homeless, and hurting people at my local rescue mission, and has given me the gift of writing which has led to a global writing ministry.

How about you? Consider writing out your spiritual journey. If you are not a writer, make a list of the spiritual highs and lows in your life. Write down the opportunities that God has opened for ministry. Think of Bible verses that have helped you mature as a Christian. What things have held you back in your spiritual journey? What paths has your life taken? Are there negative situations from your past that keep popping up in your mind? Are there attitudes or habits you struggle with? What are some spiritual victories or breakthroughs you have had?

Wherever your journey has taken you, God can use it to minister to others. In fact, the more difficulties you have been through the more you can relate to the emotional, religious, and physical issues of others.

If your life has been a mess, God can take it and turn it into a message to help others. At the age of 50 God sifted through all that I have been through, all the junk in my life, and gave me a new vision and purpose. He can do the same for you, no matter your age.

With God’s wisdom and guidance, where would you like to go with your spiritual journey in the future?

Here are some Bible verses to help you in your spiritual journey.

Phi; 3:13-14,”One thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead. I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 ,”Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Ephesians 3:20,”Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.”

  1. Hi John,
Been working with an individual who is “so conflicted” about the Bible.
There has been progress made – praying that God will lead her and bring her to “his bosom and fold.”
    Great article, thank you.
    God Bless~
