The Never Changing Truth of God’s Word

In the Oxford English Dictionary a new word has been coined: “post-truth.” However one defines truth, how can it be said that we are past the time of truth? It takes many forms. There is moral truth, ethical truth, and abiding principles that have been the foundation of culture and society for centuries. One of the definitions given by Webster’s Dictionary is “the quality of being in accordance with experience, facts, or reality.” Is one to say then that there is no more experience, fact, or reality? Has truth taken a back seat to emotions, experience and relativism? I believe it has to a large degree, even in some churches. Some people are even rejecting the Ten Commandments, which have provided a moral compass for centuries.  It is very evident that if people were to abide by them the world would be a much better place.

Truth does not change. What has changed is more and more people not accepting it.  I submit to you that there are three main areas of truth: morality, the condition of the human heart, and the truth of the Bible. Romans 1 uses two significant phrases to  clarify the rejection of truth. Verse 18 uses the phrase, suppress the truth.”  Verse 25  says “they exchanged the truth of God for a lie.” There is truth about human nature and the consequences of attitudes and actions. However, people want to live without any accountability. Perhaps that is the main reason why truth is rejected. We all are accountable before our creator, even those who have rejected God.

The most important truth that many are missing is the spiritual.  II Timothy 3:7 states that people are “always learning but never coming to a knowledge of the truth” because “the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ,  who is the image of God” (II Corinthians 4:4). It is God’s desire, however, for everyone “to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” (I Timothy 2:4). The Bible’s trustworthiness is beyond any doubt. It has been proven true by history, archaeology, and fulfilled prophecy. It has been proven true by people who have experienced a life transformation by the indwelling Holy Spirit of God, whom the Bible says guides us into all truth.

Biblical truth says in Romans 3:23 that “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” There has never been a perfect person except the God-man Jesus Christ, who himself claimed to be “the way, the truth, and the life…” (John 14:6). The truth is that God loves each person. He sent his Son, Jesus, to die on a cross and rise from the dead. Each person who receives this truth experiences forgiveness of sin and hope for this life and for all  eternity.

I have two questions for you. Why do you think that people reject the truth even when it  results in  many of the problems we have today? If you have not already done so, what steps do you need to take in seeing truth evidenced in your life?

  1. I just recently came across this term “post-truth” describing the Church today. It certainly describes the times and maybe the end-times. Well done John explaining what is happening to the truth and pointing us towards the truth.
