Finding the Dream Job

Work is our design; it is our purpose.  Work us allows us emulate God: He still works—creating, unifying, restoring and healing!  We follow His example with work that is good for others, good for us and good for the Kingdom of God.  Do you hear his call to great, good work?

Big Dreams

Ask a child want they want to be when they grow up, and the dreams are big:  astronauts, presidents…world-changers.  As the years pass, dreams fade into accepting drudgery as the price of a paycheck.  Children are right, though:  God created us to do great things.   The dreams of children reflect the seeds of glory planted in their hearts by the Creator.  Those seeds are in your heart too.  Maybe it is a job change tugging at your heart; perhaps you are just entering the world of work.  Seek the greatness God calls you to…not a paycheck to pay your way.

Sacred or Secular?

Begin by eliminating the arbitrary, false distinction of secular and sacred work.  It is not just the work we do that determines the ‘goodness’ of that work; it is who we are while we do that work that determines its sacredness. There is a vast array of good works to be done.  A mechanic who restores vehicles to working order ministers as effectively as a physical therapist that helps muscles work together properly.  A sales clerk who speaks words of encouragement to a frazzled mom serves just as a warehouse worker who soothes ruffled feathers and builds unity among co-workers does.  The opportunities for good works are continuous; meeting those opportunities with the grace of God makes the work sacred.

Work with all your heart!

Next, listen to whatever makes your heart beat faster…or soften with compassion.  Have you always loved animals or felt a thrill when making a broken thing useful again?  What bring us joy reveals the ways God speaks to us.  Where He speaks to us, He longs to speak through us.  The most lucrative career may dry up your soul or destroy your body; seek the field that fits your unique design.  God designed you to change the world!

Begin to look for ways to weave your passions into your life. Perhaps your work already fits your design; then, simply ask God to show you the good works He has waiting there for you.  Maybe you feel God calling you to new work.   Build your skill set as needed; update your resume with related activities and education.  Venturing into new fields on a part-time or even volunteer basis offers many a path to their dreams.  It is said, life is what happens while you make plans.  Act on your dreams and they begin to happen!  Remember, God is not bound to traditional routes; He can open doors in unusual ways. He found Moses in the desert, Joseph in jail and John the Baptist in the wilderness.  He will find you; just prepare yourself step-by-step.

Don’t limit the answer to your own understanding.

Finally, keep your eyes sharp.  The dreams we dream often look different when they arrive.  Never forget the nation of Israel missed the Messiah they knew about.  The ways of God are higher than our ways; His design far grander.  Commit your ways unto the Lord and let Him direct your paths.  Delight in Him, and He will plant seeds of desires that will come to fruition!
