Showing Our Pets The Love They Deserve

By Joel B.

Friends, many of us own pets and with pet ownership comes a great responsibility. Pets are limited in their ability to take care of themselves. They depend on us to feed, water, and give them attention. If any of these needs are not met, it will lead to a miserable existence, and possibly even sickness or death.

You see, God has never been ignorant or animal care. In fact, our Lord and Savior is even identified as a shepherd. This is not by accident. Whether you are aware of this or not, the Bible does address caring for our pets and livestock. God even claims ownership of all animals in one verse:

Psalm 50:10-11 For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.

Furthermore, God has forewarned man that he is to treat his pets and livestock respectfully:

Prov 12:10 A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

So according to the Holy Bible, pets are God’s property and they are to be treated kindly. However many people tire of their pets. They stop playing with them when they get old or they struggle just go get out the food and water dishes. Walks become a bother, and many times pets like dogs just end up chained to a doghouse all day. That is not living a good life and no person would want to live in such a torturous manner.

Christ is the example of how to tend our pets and livestock:

Isaiah 40:11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

So, take a bit of time each day to play with old Spot or Mittens. If you don’t have the time for your pets, then it may just be time to put them up for adoption so that they can be loved by a family that would find joy in them. If you do have the time, then get out that stick or ball of yarn and enjoy some quality time with your precious pet. It will mean a lot to them and it means a lot to your Lord and Savior. Thank you for reading and God bless.

  1. Joel,

I love, love this article! I have several pets, including my very pampered dog. They are such a joy, and I believe reflections of Christ’s unconditional love. My dog loves me no matter what I do.
