“Joseph” Movie Review

Genesis 37:3-4(NKJV)—3) Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also he made him a tunic of many colors. 4) But when the brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.

This biblical movie came out in 1995. Most people know this Bible story. It is so nice to see the words of the Bible acted out. It follows the Bible almost perfectly. Ben Kingsley is Potiphar; Paul Mercurio plays the older Joseph; Martin Lanali is Jacob; and Leslie Ann Warren plays Potiphar’s wife.

The beginning of the movie starts when Potiphar meets Joseph. It continues on until the wife accuses him and asks for him to be put to death. Then Potiphar asks Joseph what happened and this is where Joseph tells of his childhood up to where the brothers sold him into slavery.

This is one of my favorite Bible stories. God turns Joseph’s betrayal into triumph. It is a story of treachery and redemption. I think it is the best portrayal of forgiveness.

After the wife accuses Joseph of defiling her, Potiphar has to put him in prison. He didn’t sentence him to death because he knew the wife lied. Joseph takes his gift for divining dreams to rise from slave to Pharaoh’s most trusted aide. The Pharaoh takes Joseph out of prison to interpret his dreams and removes Joseph from the prison for good and he saves Egypt from seven years of famine. It is excellently portrayed when the brothers come for food and Joseph finds himself face to face with them and they don’t recognize him.

Joseph says, “Forgiveness is greater than vengeance.” He also says, “Compassion more powerful than anger.” This movie is from “The Bible Collection.” This movie is put together well, with great actors and the acting is excellent.

Genesis 45:5(NKJV)—“But now, do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life.
