A Message about our Biker Brothers and Sisters

On May 20, 2015 one of our TBL authors wrote an article on some biker violence in Waco, Texas. She wrote it not only as a Christian author, but as a concerned community member of Waco. Fast forward to today. The Bottom Line, Ministries has received numerous negative comments by members of the biker community. So let’s take this as an opportunity to clear the air and look at bikers from another perspective.

Biking, Don’t Knock it Until You’ve Tried It

Friends, I will be the first to admit that I am not a biker. This doesn’t mean I don’t think it’s cool. In fact, I have a great admiration for those who choose to ride and I think it can be a very healthy lifestyle. Here are some observations I have made about bikers:

* They are generally very loyal people
* They have a great sense of community
* They can greatly influence others
* They keep an active lifestyle
* They get plenty of fresh air
* They have very unique style with their clothes, bikes, helmets, etc…
* Biking is a great way to be close to your significant other
* There are some great biker ministries out there

In addition to these observations, I would also like to say that I believe biking is for anyone who’s willing to embrace it. Throughout my life, many of my friends, neighbors, family members, and coworkers have been involved with biking. In fact, I’ve never known of anyone whose taken on this lifestyle to disengage from it by choice.

There are Many Christian Bikers

Sometimes bikers get a bad rap. I’m guessing a lot of this is because of the black leather and tattoos that many of them sport. However, let’s be fair, God measures people by their heart and so should we (1 Sam 16:7). I think what it comes down to is that bikers are people just like anyone else and they deserve to be looked at with dignity and respect.

Something else I would like to mention is that many people bike independently and don’t necessarily take on the look. They are doctors, lawyers, firemen, police officers, and even pastors. They are mothers and fathers who have cares and dreams just like anyone else.

Back around 33 A.D., Jesus Christ died on the cross for every biker that would ever ride (Matt 27:50). He did this because they were fearfully and wonderfully made in His image and He loves them dearly (Gen 1:27, Psa 139:14, John 3:16). Many bikers have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and they are our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Most Bikers are Friendly People

I may not be a biker, but I have visited some biker cafes and restaurants in my day. I found the environment to be very peaceful, and something that was very apparent was the camaraderie between fellow bikers. You see, most bikers are very social people and I believe they live by a code that involves enjoying life and showing those close to them much respect. Sure, you may occasionally find a bad one in the bunch, but isn’t this true about any social group?

Furthermore, many bikers are also church members. In fact, there are even biker churches out there that provide a safe and wholesome place for bikers to fellowship. Looking for a biker-friendly church in your area? Check out the B.F.C.N and see if there is an applicable church for you in your area!

Christian Biker Organizations

The last thing I would like to cover are Christian biker organizations. Some of these include the Christian Motorcyclist Association, Fellowship Riders, Bikers For Christ, and Unite Bikers Against Drugs. These organizations not only encourage fellowship between bikers, but they also rally fellow riders to take on issues such as drugs, and even spreading the gospel of Christ out in the community. Isn’t that awesome? I know if a biker walked up to me with something to say, I would certainly listen. What a blessing bikers can be to the Christian community!

Final Thought

Friends, God loves you dearly whether you ride a Harley or a Huffy. The thing to keep in mind is that we need to reflect this love towards others. So, if you are a biker, take some time to consider your faith in Jesus Christ and how you can both fellowship and educate those around you with the Truth that is in you. For those who don’t ride, be sure to embrace those who do. Bikers have an important place in our society and they deserve both compassion and respect. Let’s do our best to love on another, and one day let’s all rejoice together in the heavens. Thank you for reading and God bless.

What are some ways society can make bikers feel more appreciated? I want to hear from you!

  1. Joel,
Beautiful article! We have a group of bikers on the coast where I live who will ride up and down the beach and stop as specific points to pray over our cities. They started doing this after our city was left in ruins after Hurricane Katrina. They invite all to participate with them. There is also another group of bikers that holds an annual toy fund. I personally know someone who has bible study in the Harley Davidson biker shop that he owns. All I’m saying where I’m from we have some awesome bikers! I’m sure it is like that most places. We know that there is good and bad in EVERY group.

    • Stephanie,

Thank you for the wonderful feedback. I believe God has a special place in His heart for bikers and they are doing many wonderful things out in the world. What an encouragement to hear about your friend with the HD biker shop, and about some of the other endeavors by biker ministries. God bless.

  2. Joel,
