Break Free from Word Curses

In my previous article, I described the power of words to produce good or evil. Ephesians 4:29 says, “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.” Our words can build others up and even “impart grace” to them. But our words can also tear down, bring harm and even release curses upon others.

Yes, words can actually take the form of a curse and have a detrimental effect on people’s lives. Whoever coined the phrase, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” did not know what they were talking about!

Are you living under the power of a word curse? Are there things that have been spoken over your life—even years ago—that have taken the effect of a curse and are acting like a barrier over you? If you need to break free from hurtful words, here are some steps you can take:

  1. Forgive the one who spoke the words: It is so important for us to forgive others who have hurt us. Jesus made it clear that unforgiveness is not an option for His followers (see Matthew 6:12-15). In light of God’s mercy to us, we are able to release others who have hurt us. Though the pain is real, choosing to forgive will be a key step in bringing healing and freedom.
  2. Break any agreement with the words: To break free from word curses you must break your agreement with them. Any way that you have agreed with them, accepted them or repeated them as truth must be renounced and replaced with the truth of God’s Word. Say something like this: “I break the power of these words and uproot them from my life. I break any agreement I have made with the lies that were spoken.”
  3. Cast away any evil spirits: It is not uncommon for evil spirits to be attached to word curses that were spoken to us. Once the words are broken, simply command any spirit attached to the curse to go. Demons have no right to be present once the words have been renounced and broken.
  4. Replace the lies with truth: Renew your mind with God’s Word, and speak the opposite of the curses that were spoken over you. Know that you are blessed by God as a redeemed son or daughter, and that Jesus paid the price for every curse to be broken. Walk in the blessings of God and believe that He has good plans for you!

No believer needs to be living under the power of a curse. Jesus paid the price to set us free and bring us into the blessing of God. Don’t allow hurtful words to be a barrier in your life any longer!

What has been said to, or about you, that you need to renounce and replace with truth?
