Even Alone He Is Near: The Greatness Of God Throughout Life

Genesis 28:16 And Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, ‘For sure the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.

Realization: The Greatness of God in Jacob’s Dream

Jacob, fleeing from his brother Esau, finds himself alone in the wilderness. He lays his head on a stone and dreams of a ladder reaching to heaven, with angels ascending and descending. God speaks to him, reaffirming the covenant made with Abraham. When Jacob awakens, he realizes something profound: God was near, even when he felt most alone.

This moment is striking because Jacob wasn’t praying, worshiping, or even seeking God. He was exhausted, uncertain, and vulnerable. Yet God met him there. This account reminds us that God’s greatness is not dependent on our awareness—it is constant, active, and deeply personal.

Supporting Scriptures

  1. Psalm 139:7–10Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I run away from where You are? If I go up to heaven, You are there. If I make my bed in the grave, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning and live in the farthest part of the sea, even there Your hand will lead me, and Your right hand will hold me.”
  2. Acts 17:27 – “They were to look for God, if they might feel after Him and find Him, even when He is not far from each one of us.”

‘Dear Lord, You are near in every breath, every season, every silence. From cradle to grave, You walk beside us—unseen yet unwavering. Help us to recognize Your presence in the mundane and the miraculous. May our lives be ladders reaching heavenward, and our hearts altars of praise. Prepare us to meet You, not with fear, but with joy. In Jesus name, Amen.”
