Guard Your Heart

As most of you are aware, complaining and discontentment are symptoms of a deeper problem. When we find ourselves griping or whining it usually means something else looms large. Sometimes, it’s only an emotional reaction to ‘not getting our own way’. In simple terms, it means unhappy or dissatisfied. To get a better sense of inner restlessness, let’s look into the life of Moses as he led the Hebrew children out of Egyptian bondage.

During the forty years of wandering through the wilderness, Moses endured continuous complaints and pouty whisperings from the people he led. Although God provided manna, quail, water from the rock, clothes, shoes that didn’t wear out and many other blessings, still, they grumbled. At one point, God sent fiery snakes.

“And the people spoke against God and Moses: Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread (manna). So the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of them died” (Numbers 21:5-6).

As you easily see, the Hebrew children blamed Moses and God. Later, the disgruntled people repented and approached Moses saying, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord that He take away the serpents from us. So Moses prayed for the people” (Num 21:7). Might I suggest here that fussing is a sin? Also, ‘not being grateful’ must grieve the heart of God. Perpetual bellyaching displays a lack of trust because His everyday nourishment proves He cares.

When we’re grateful for daily sustenance, our attitude changes from dissatisfaction to a thanksgiving lifestyle. It’s God’s good graces and pleasure to daily load His children with benefits (Psalm 145:16). He is the only provider for all our needs and we can rely on Him to fulfill His promises. Therefore, I believe the remedy for murmuring or ‘poor-me’ self-pitying behavior is a thankful heart.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:6 NKJV).

  1. Sometimes the weight of this world cause us to grumble, and we tend to forget all God’s blessings. But I pray that He reminds us in our times of murmuring so that we can remember from whom our constant help comes. Thanks for the reminder Darlene.
