The Abyss Of A Mother’s Purse

Sunday morning typically reigns as one of peace and joy and above all else surprises. Two Sunday’s ago was of no different. I was deep in the midst of worshiping my King when my five year old decided he wanted to write something down on his small pad of paper. Quietly, I reached down and delved deep into the abyss of my purse in pursuit of a pen. Gum wrappers, hair ties, Kleenexes, crumbs from someone’s’ snack cracker, and the greatest surprise yet, a half eaten banana wrapped gently in it’s peel aged to at least one week of perfection. What on earth! If anyone that day could have seen my horrid expression they would have been passing out from laughing so hard.

Okay now before you judge my abilities to clean, you need to take a quick glance into the life of this mother of four. Between teaching all day, continuing the evening as chauffer, head chef, chief custodian, average accountant, and maid service, the notion of cleaning out a purse becomes an obscure idea. But, I guess it’s not impossible to fit in to my day right? I just have to make the time. After all, what am I looking at for cleaning time- ten minutes tops?

We kind of do that with God right? We fill our day with so much “stuff” that we allow weeks to slip through our hands before spending quality time with Him. We treat Him like the rotten banana allowing our relationship to become bruised and mushy as he hides away in the depths of our hearts. We didn’t mean for our relationship to rot, it just happened as we allowed life to fill in around us indirectly pushing Him away believing we could do things just fine on our own. Yet, that is definitely not how God wants us to commune with Him. He wants us to start each day a new spending time in His presence asking Him to fill us. Whenever I am in need of supernatural strength, I call upon His name to trade with me His strength for my weaknesses. It is amazing how much work I can achieve when I rely upon my King instead of my Cup of Joe to get me through the day.

Whatever fruit may be rotting away in your purse, don’t let it become so far gone that the only choice you have is to throw it out. Instead, take the time to establish a routine habit of spending time with the King of King and the Lord of Lords. By relying upon Him, you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. (Philippians 4:13)
