Faithful Participation

Day by day it becomes more evident that, to have any hope of restoring America to greatness, Believers must once again recognize our civic responsibility. The assault on Christian values and the involvement of people of faith, in government, has caused the religious community to withdraw to a certain degree from the political arena. We may feel we should leave it in God’s hands. After all, John 18:36 clearly tell us:

Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.” (NLT)

Is this why some of us have allowed ourselves to comply with those who would prefer to silence us and make us irrelevant? – Has the Christian community become as the saying goes, ‘so heavenly minded that we are no earthly good,’?
Devoted people of faith may attend church regularly – sometimes multiple times per week. Perhaps it is time to have a bit more commitment to and involvement in, the political process that is shaping the future of our country for our children and grandchildren?

God gave us ten commands, the first five pertain to our relationship with Him, the last five – our relationship to others. The Ten Commandments are a God-given blueprint for a healthy functional society. He has written them on our hearts. They are the basis for our laws.

Political involvement takes an investment of time. Though we must not let our involvement overshadow our spiritual devotion, is it not our duty as Christians to guard our government against corruption? Shouldn’t the church be active participants in the system that shapes our society? When we remain silent, by default, we give our permission to those things that violate our faith. When we fail to teach our children biblical principles, they cannot benefit from the wisdom contained therein.

They should see us attending local school and government meetings. We should show them that we believe it is important to become informed on issues and take our responsibility to vote seriously. They need to hear us give support to candidates who vote biblical values.

Deuteronomy 4:5-9 5 “Look, I now teach you these decrees and regulations just as the Lord my God commanded me, so that you may obey them in the land you are about to enter and occupy. 6 Obey them completely, and you will display your wisdom and intelligence among the surrounding nations. When they hear all these decrees, they will exclaim, ‘How wise and prudent are the people of this great nation!’ 7 For what great nation has a god as near to them as the Lord our God is near to us whenever we call on him? 8 And what great nation has decrees and regulations as righteous and fair as this body of instructions that I am giving you today?

9 “But watch out! Be careful never to forget what you yourself have seen. Do not let these memories escape from your mind as long as you live! And be sure to pass them on to your children and grandchildren. (NLT)

God has placed the stewardship of this nation in our hands. He has advised us how to make it a great nation. It is our responsibility to follow His instructions and teach them to future generations.

  1. Melinda,

Great article. It’s easy to do nothing, but then nothing gets better. I think a lot of times people feel powerless. Like, “what difference can one person make” mentality. The neat thing about us being able to share our articles on this website is that we get the opportunity to represent the Christian media and we can make a difference in the lives of others and even empower them to get involved in various public domains. Thanks for sharing. God bless.
