“I will sing to the Lord as long as I live. I will praise God to my last breath!” Psalm 104:3 (The Living Bible)
Singing praises to God has power! Throughout His Word, we see healing, salvation, and deliverance taking place through songs of praise to God. It’s easy to forget or misunderstand this spiritual truth, but recently, a nine-year- old Atlanta boy showed us all what songs of praise can do.
It was March 31st, and young Willie Myrick was in his own front yard when he was grabbed by an unkown assailant who tried enticing him with money, then whisked the child away in a waiting vehicle. Ordered to “shut up,” Willie instead began to sing a gospel song written by Grammy Award winning artist Hezekiah Walker. The song “Every Praise” filled the vehicle as the young boy sang its lyrics for the next 3 hours, lyrics that include the phrase “God my Deliverer.”
Finally, the kidnapper could take no more, and released Willie from the vehicle in a neighborhood where a homeowner assisted him with calling his guardian for help. By God’s grace, he was soon home safe! Police are still looking for the suspect in this kidnapping.
We never know how a song will affect others, but God’s Word never returns void, whether through preaching, sharing, or in song. And song-writer Hezekiah Walker points this out: “I really believe that God spoke through me to save that young man’s life.” When you are facing a crisis, or the unkown, and fear threatens to overwhelm you, do what this brave nine-year-old did…sing a song!
