Our Hope: The Bible For Today

‘And He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.’ Luke 9:1 (ASV)

I have heard it said, quite often, that the miracles and signs in the Bible that were performed in Jesus’ name were intended only for Biblical times.  If you hold that viewpoint, then nothing in the Bible can be considered to be for today.

The Word of God was written for and provided to us for His glory, and for our instruction.  This is how we learn of and about our God. He teaches us through it, and loves us through it.   The answers to the many questions and needs in our lives are contained in it.

If we depend on it, and believe that it is the Living Word of God, then we must believe that every word is true, and applies today, just as it did yesterday, and as it will again tomorrow.

‘And He sent them forth to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.’ Luke 9: 2 (ASV)

Jesus equipped His disciples to go out and do His work, or as He always said ‘the work of My Father’. In Matthew 28: 18-20, Jesus commands His disciples to go and make disciples of all the nations.  This statement infers that they are to carry on His work, and teach others to do the same.  And His work included the miracles and signs that He had taught them to perform.

How, then, do some believe these things are not for us, for Jesus’ disciples to do today, as we carry on Jesus’ work?  It is a common problem, the ‘can’t see the forest for the trees syndrome’, as I like to call it.  People can read the words, but they can’t comprehend their meaning.  If we believe in Jesus, if we believe He still lives today, and if we believe in the Father, and that all He promised throughout the ages has been delivered, then how can we say ‘these things’ are not for today?

‘And they departed, and went throughout the villages, preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere.’ Luke 9: 6 (ASV)

He, Jesus, is our hope.  He taught the disciples to do what He did, and still does today.  He instructed them to teach others, who were also to teach even more.  And it continues even today.  Hope given, hope in and around us and alive today, the miracles and signs are all around us.  They are for TODAY!

  1. They really ARE for today! I think miracles happen around us. I have seen signs, so many. I just make a list of them.
