Following The Lamb of God: A Path Through The Stumbling

Jeremiah 6:21 is a sobering verse that reveals God’s response to persistent disobedience:

Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will lay stumbling blocks before this people, and the fathers and the sons together shall fall upon them; the neighbor and his friend shall perish  Jeremiah 6:21

Divine Judgment Through Stumbling Blocks

Stumbling blocks- symbolize the consequences God allows or sets in motion—obstacles that cause people to fall spiritually, morally, or even physically.

These aren’t random hardships; they’re purposeful disruptions meant to awaken a rebellious people to their need for repentance.

Collective Consequences –The verse emphasizes that fathers and sons, neighbors and friends will all fall together. This highlights how sin and its consequences ripple through families and communities—not just individuals. It’s a communal unraveling, showing that when a society turns from God, everyone is affected. Consequences are therefore a domino effect that resounds loudly throughout the land, essentially affecting all things as humanity overall.  Devastating blows and irrefutable damage come from disobedience and casual disregard to the LORD and His Word.

Spiritual Blindness and Refusal to Listen

Earlier in the chapter, God laments that His people refuse to listen to His warnings. The stumbling blocks are not just punishment—they’re also a final attempt to get their attention.

But because they’ve hardened their hearts, even these wake-up calls lead to ruin instead of repentance.

A Deeper Lesson – This verse reminds us that God’s justice is not arbitrary. He warns, He pleads, He sends prophets like Jeremiah—but when people persist in ignoring Him, He allows them to experience the full weight of their choices.

Supportive Scriptures

  • Proverbs 4:19 – “The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble.”
  • Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
  • Hebrews 3:12 – “Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.”
  • Isaiah 8:14–15 – “He will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling…”
  • 1 Peter 2:8 – “…‘A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.’ They stumble because they disobey the word…”

Moral Reflections

  • Stumbling blocks are not merely punishments—they are divine interventions. They are God’s way of saying, “Stop. Look. Return.”
  • When a society collectively ignores God’s voice, the consequences are not isolated—they are generational and communal.
  • God’s justice is never without warning. He sends prophets, signs, and even hardship to awaken hearts.
  • The tragedy is not in the stumbling—it’s in refusing to rise and return.
  • Obedience is not legalism; it is love in action. Servitude to the Lord is not bondage—it is freedom from the tyranny of sin.

Prayer of Thanks and Cry for Obedience:

“O Sovereign LORD, we thank You for Your justice that is never without mercy. Thank You for the stumbling blocks that awaken us from spiritual slumber. Thank You for not abandoning us to our own destruction, but for calling us back—again and again—with patience and power.

We cry out to You not only for ourselves but for this world. Let the hearts of Your children be pierced with holy conviction. Let the ears of the deaf be opened to Your Word. Let the blind see the path of righteousness once more.

Raise up a generation that does not stumble in rebellion but walks in reverent obedience. May we not be a people who perish in pride, but a people who live in purpose—servants of the Most High, lovers of truth, and keepers of the covenant.

We return to You, Lord. We choose the ancient paths. We choose You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
