Stephen, The First Martyr
Stephen is an important hero in the Holy Bible. He accomplished an amazing feat by becoming the first Christian martyr. He was just so committed to his faith. By this I mean he literally was on fire for Jesus Christ. Stephen was so committed to his faith in Jesus Christ, that even when the people accused him of blaspheming God and Moses (Acts 6:13), he stuck to his guns and continued to speak the truth (Acts 7:1-53). The people were so angry they gnashed their teeth (Acts 7:54) and stoned him (Acts 7:59).
The Standing Ovation
Wait! Rewind! Something amazing happened right before Stephen was stoned. Jesus was standing at the right hand of God ready to accept him. Wait? Say what? Yes, Jesus stood up from His throne to receive Stephen, the first martyr. You could say He gave him a standing ovation for the great work he had done. Isn’t that amazing? Implications
Could it be that Christ stood up to encourage such behavior? I believe so. I believe our Lord wants us to be diligent in spreading His word even if it costs us our life. Stephen wasn’t afraid and neither should we. We need to boldly proclaim our faith and risk it all for the one who gave it all for us.
