Christianity is a Religion for Thinking People

Contrary to what atheists say, Christianity is not a religion of blind unthinking belief, it is in fact a thinking and questioning religion. Every Christian questions their faith, we have to in order to practice it. Think about it; Christianity is about building a relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ and relationships are built on questions.

When we are building a relationship with someone, we question them on their opinions, where they come from, what they do for a living; we ask them questions to get to know them. It is the same with Christianity. Christians ask questions on the nature of God; on morality; on how faith works; we question theology and doctrine; we struggle to understand the Trinity and the nature of the incarnation; we question the exclusivity of the faith and why Jesus is the only way; we question how to interpret scripture and how to apply it; we ask difficult questions like why evil exists and why God allows it; we question the law of God and if it matters today.

On and on the questions go, we have an endless number of them because God Himself is endless, there is no end to learning about Him. As a self-proclaimed theology geek, I have read a lot, not just the scriptures, but the more well known church fathers, the reformers, the classics of Catholicism and obscure Eastern Orthodox saints, as well as a fair amount of liberal theology and I have found the more I learn the more questions I have.

As my faith continues to grow and I develop a deeper relationship with Jesus, the more I realize how much I have left to learn. But I have also learned I am not alone in my questioning and my search for understanding. We, the church, have each other and what is more, we have the Holy Spirit of God who gives us wisdom.

James 1:5 “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

And who grants us understanding of spiritual things:

1 Corinthians 2:12 “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.”

Don’t be afraid to question your faith, if there is something you are struggling with, search out the answer through study, prayer and fellowship and your faith will grow and strengthen as your relationship with Jesus deepens.
