Christians and Greek Life: Should I Pledge a Fraternity or Sorority?

A young woman was struggling in her marriage, instigating quarrels with her husband that were previously uncharacteristic of her. When she sought ministry, she was asked if she’d had any involvement with the occult. It was then that the minister noticed a ring that she was wearing. It was an owl-shaped diamond cluster, and when asked about it, she said it was a sorority ring. The owl signified hidden wisdom, and was the sorority mascot. The minister discerned that there was a demon connected with the ring, and when it was thrown away and her sorority vows renounced, a demon came out of the woman. Her marriage troubles subsided following her deliverance.

This story, along with extraordinary testimony of what happened when the woman’s parents destroyed the affiliated owl collection she had left in their house, are detailed in Jim Croft’s book Invisible Enemies: How to Recognize and Defeat Demons. The people ministering to the young woman were Derek and Lydia Prince.

For any Christian, teenager or otherwise, it is important to understand that there is a significant relationship between any secret society, including Greek Letter Organizations, and the occult. The word occult means “hidden,” and any knowledge or wisdom gained apart from God is deadly. Greek Letter Organizations (GLO) are often affiliated with pagan gods (idolatry), and their practices often bear a relationship to Freemasonry, Illuminati, or witchcraft, all of which have occult origins. Elements frequently found in some of these secret societies are:

  • Mind control – manipulation through rules and tactics which are meant to strip individuality and rebuild with loyalty to brotherhood or sisterhood
  • Abuse – demeaning things said (word curses) as well as physical or sexual abuse
  • Hazing – initiation rituals that shame, incriminate, and even endanger the lives of those pledging
  • Pledges/Oaths – Vowing physical harm over one’s self if secrets are ever disclosed (self-proclaimed curse); some pledges invoke pagan gods/goddesses

Deuteronomy 13:6-8 says,

“If your brother, your mother’s son, or your son or daughter, or the wife you cherish, or your friend who is as your own soul, entice you secretly, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods’ (whom neither you nor your fathers have known, of the gods of the peoples who are around you, near you or far from you, from one end of the earth to the other end), you shall not yield to him or listen to him.”

In light of all of this, is it possible that a Christian could, in faith, join a fraternity or sorority? Here are some questions to consider:

  • Have I prayed about joining? What does God say about it?
  • What is my motivation for wanting to join this organization? Will my self-esteem and personal gratification in any way be affected by joining or not joining?
  • Will I be required to take oaths or make vows as part of pledging?
  • Will being part of this fraternity or sorority require me to compromise by engaging in activities that go against my beliefs?
  • Is there any fear element to my joining (i.e. fear of missing out on something, fear of losing a friend, fear of status/popularity, etc)

Are you considering joining a fraternity or sorority? Have you been a part of any kind of secret society in the past? Has the Holy Spirit highlighted anything as part of this association that you prayerfully need to recognize, repent of, and/or renounce?

  1. Greetings! God has been dealing with me for quite some time about my affiliation with a sorority. I pledged membership with this organization in college and have not been “officially” active, but up until a couple of days ago, I still claimed membership. Recently, I was praying and asking God to reveal areas in my life that needed to change. I woke up horrified with images saw, and this time, I finally understood what the dream meant. I immediately started looking up prayers to renounce membership in a sorority. I’ve been praying & fasting since and have thrown out all of the apparel that I owned. Months ago I boxed all of the turtles (the sorority’s mascot) and placed them in storage. Seeing them just started to bother me! Needless to say, they will be permanently removed as well. I honestly had no idea what I was getting into all those years ago when I joined, but I’m so glad for God’s grace & mercy. He allowed me to get out & did not let me stay in darkness!

  2. That’s incredible how God revealed that to you, and how you responded! Thanks for sharing your story, and appreciate your humble heart.

  3. Hello. I joined a sorority a few years ago. Prior to joining and even after joining, I had seen various Youtube videos regarding sororities/fraternities and why Christians shouldn’t join them. Maybe about a year or so after joining, I became an inactive member. I am still somewhat torn on this topic though.

    • Hello AC,
Thanks for commenting. It seems as though the Lord is taking you on some kind of journey with this, and I affirm your obedience to Him. I pray He makes everything clear that you need to know, and great is your peace as you follow Him.
      Blessings!

  4. Do you believe I should remove my name from my sorority’s roster . I am not active as an alumnae, but I have written letters of recommendation.

    • Hi Teresa, my thought on that would be to pray and seek the Lord as to whether He’s asking you to do this. I add to your prayers my own, that He would reveal to you His will and that you would follow it. Blessings! (P.S. you probably already know this, but the meaning of your name in Greek is “to reap” or “to harvest.” I pray that this is a season of harvest for you, and that you see fulfillment of many things your heart has desired).

  5. What groups should I avoid for the Illuminati to live prosperous?

  6. My husband pledged in college. I know he is under demonic influence. Our marriage is like a prison. He won’t acknowledge that he made agreements and covenants with demons by performing those rituals and repeating those chants. He is still affiliated and very much a participant. I didn’t realize that becoming one with him in marriage would draw me into to the chaos with him. How do I get away. It’s divorce my only option? I’ve got to get my kids out of this mess.
