Satan Is Like A Black Dog In The Darkness

When I take my little dog for a walk after dark, the neighbor’s larger black dog at times comes over to intimidate him. Because the dog is black I can’t see it in the dark, so I have to go out with a flashlight so he will not sneak up on us.

There is a spiritual parallel in this. In the kingdom of darkness our “adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour”(1 Peter 5:8). He is called the angel of light in 2 Corinthians 11:14, but in actuality Satan is deceptive. He is the god of this world “who has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel…”(2 Corinthians 4:4).

There is great deception today which the Bible warns about, which can sneak up on us like a black dog in the dark, if we are not on guard with the light of the gospel. John 8:12 says, “Jesus is the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

How exactly can people be deceived by the schemes of Satan?  One way is by living by some religious law, working for one’s salvation, prosperity theology, false teachers, religious cults, or legalism. Anything other than the basic message of the gospel concerning salvation is deceit. There is grave danger in adding to, or subtracting from, the gospel (Galatians 1:8), that Jesus died for our sins and rose from the grave. Ephesians 2:8 says, “By grace you are saved through faith. This is not of your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” There is deception in believing that a person goes to heaven apart from receiving the gospel. We must resist the devil by walking in the light (John 8:12), and sticking to the gospel.

Deceit can easily happen by doubting God’s word, like what we read about in Genesis 3:1-6, when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. Satan got them to doubt what God said, resulting in disobedience.

If you are allowing yourself to be deceived now, you can be deceived in the future. If you are alive when the Tribulation Period begins and the world is ruled by the anti-Christ, Revelation 19:20 says those who had received the mark of the beast were deceived.

Be aware of how Satan tries to attack us. He often attacks us in the areas where we are most prone to fall into sin, or in times of physical sickness or emotional distress or depression. The best way to thwart the attacks of Satan is through prayer and Bible reading, including memorizing verses of scripture. Ephesians 6:10-11 admonishes us to “be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” The armor of God includes truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the word of God, and prayer.

Do not be deceived by walking in the kingdom of darkness and allowing Satan to creep up on you like a black dog in the dark. Stay in the light of God’s Word.
